Tuli Kupferberg Benefit St. Ann's Warehouse - Friday 22 January

Last week St Ann's hosted a benefit gig for the musician and poet Tuli Kupferberg. He is an American counterculture poet, author, cartoonist, pacifist anarchist, publisher and co-founder of the band The Fugs. (No I hadn't heard of them either).   I found this video posted on You Tube on "Tulifuli"  - his very own channel (you can also get clips of his poetry, anarchist thoughts and music there)

Tuli suffered a stroke in April 2009, leaving him blind and in need of constant care. This benefit was to pay for medical expenses not covererd by Medicare.

There was a star studded cast assembled for the event: (via Time Out listing) Fugs (Sanders), sometime-Fugs (the great folkie Peter Stampfel), Fug contemporaries (Lou Reed) and Fug descendants (Sonic Youth, Jeffrey Lewis).  Philip Glass played piano and Laurie Anderson joined Lou Reed on Stage.

A NY Times review of this extraordinary night is here.

About

Working at Fierce and travelling about for the Clore Leadership Programme - where I am the NESTA supported fellow for entrepreneurial cultural organisations - I get to see artistic and cultural work that is exciting and inspiring. This is the place I can share them online to see if you think they are inspiring too!
